What’s an Osteria?

An osteria is a timeless Italian tradition where locals and travellers gathered to share simple, hearty fare and enjoy local wines poured by the oste – the host, who was frequently the winemaker. Dating back to the Middle Ages, these communal hubs promoted connection and conviviality, with a focus on shared experiences rather than culinary complexity.

At Osteria Vitis, we revive this tradition with an emphasis on wines sourced not only from Italy but also from winemakers across the world who are dedicated to using traditional methods and respecting the terroir. These wines are crafted with passion and care, often by multi-generational family vineyards that embody a deep connection to the land and its history.

The food we serve at Osteria Vitis reflects the same authenticity. Our dishes are inspired by the traditional meals that the oste’s family would have prepared, celebrating the rustic, authentic Italian cuisine that has been passed down through generations. The recipes are simple but full of flavour, made with quality ingredients and often prepared in the spirit of Italy’s cucina povera – food born out of necessity but elevated over the years through tradition and care.

Whether you’re visiting to enjoy a quick glass of wine or a full meal, Osteria Vitis is a place to gather, unwind, and celebrate the joy of good food, exceptional wine, and great company – just as it has been for centuries in Italy.

Winemaker Spotlight

Osteria Vitis La Bioca Nebbiolo 3.3

La Biòca

This month, we are excited to feature La Biòca, a small family-run winery nestled in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. Known for its stunning biodiversity – home to white truffles, lean-meat cows, and the renowned Barolo wine – the Langhe is one of Italy’s most cherished wine regions. Within this picturesque landscape, La Biòca stands out as a true gem, producing wines that embody both the character of the land and the passion of its winemakers.

One of their standout wines, the Nebbiolo d’Alba Superiore Stërmà, showcases Nebbiolo grapes grown just outside the prestigious Barolo DOCG region. Though made with the same grapes as Barolo, this wine offers exceptional value for money, providing wine lovers with an authentic taste of the region at a fraction of the cost. At our most recent wine tasting event, La Biòca’s Nebbiolo Superiore was voted the best wine of the evening, and we are thrilled to have added it to our Osteria Vitis wine library.

Beyond their outstanding Nebbiolo, La Biòca is a winery that emphasises quality and tradition, with vineyards spread across various prized plots in the Langhe. Their careful attention to winemaking – from grape harvest to ageing – reflects the excellence for which this region is famed.
